The "Daisy Mae" workwear denim hat was originally developed in the late 1930s and worn by soldiers in the US Army. Soldiers modified their hats to create caps with a small peak. Buzz Rickson's "Army Brown Denim Hat" is a successful replication of these caps. Brown-dyed denim was used to make dirt and stains less visible.
