The scarf has long been an important accessory for motorcyclists. In the days before helmets were compulsory, motorcyclists often wrapped scarves around their necks and mouths to protect themselves from the wind and cold.
The classic white/black checkerboard pattern first appeared in the 1050s. Previously, the only way for race officials to communicate with drivers was through the use of flags. The checkered flag was introduced as a symbol of victory in motorsports. Soon, this pattern was also used on the racing drivers' clothing.
